Amenorrhea is the absence of menstrual periods for 3 consecutive cycles or 6 months (whichever is earlier) in reproductive-aged women, excluding pregnancy, breastfeeding, or menopause. Causes include hormonal imbalances, thyroid disorders, PCOS, excessive exercise, stress, and certain medications. It can also be diagnosed in girls who haven’t had their first period by age 16.

The Amenorrhoea Test measures the levels of six hormones in the body including testosterone, estradiol, T4, FSH, LH and prolactin, which are key indicators for menstrual cycle irregularities and disorders such as Amenorrhoea. By testing for these hormones, the test can help identify hormonal imbalances or other underlying health conditions that may be causing Amenorrhoea.

Amenorrhoea is characterised by the absence of menstrual periods in women of reproductive age, but it can also be accompanied by other symptoms such as headache, vision changes, hair loss, increased facial hair growth, acne, and breast discharge. Amenorrhoea can be classified into two types: primary amenorrhoea, where a young woman has not started her menstrual periods by age 16, and secondary amenorrhoea, where a woman who previously had normal cycles misses her menstrual period for at least 3 or more consecutive cycles, or 6 or more consecutive months (whichever comes first).

An Amenorrhoea test is important to determine the underlying cause of missed periods, which can help diagnose certain health conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or pituitary gland issues. By identifying the root cause of Amenorrhoea, patients can receive proper treatment and management to improve their overall health and prevent potential complications such as infertility, osteoporosis, or cardiovascular disease.

What is being tested?

A combination of tests to identify any imbalances that could be causing symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

They are measured to determine whether the ovaries are functioning properly & producing enough hormones to trigger ovulation and menstruation.
Sex hormones that play a crucial role in regulating the menstrual cycle. Low levels of these hormones can indicate a problem with the ovaries.
This hormone stimulates milk production in the breast tissue, but high levels can interfere with the production of other hormones which can cause Amenorrhoea

Thyroxine (T4) is a hormone produced by the thyroid gland that regulates metabolism. Abnormal levels can affect the menstrual cycle and lead to Amenorrhoea.

Whether it can be cured or managed depends on the underlying cause of the condition. In some cases, such as amenorrhea caused by hormonal imbalances, treatment with medication or hormonal therapy can help restore regular menstruation.
Women with irregular/absent periods; especially if you miss 3 cycles or 6 months, or if your cycle is consistently irregular. Identifying the cause of amenorrhea allows targeted treatment to restore regular cycles and address associated health concerns.
When it occurs during the reproductive years, it can have several long-term risks. These include decreased bone density and increased risk of osteoporosis, increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and infertility

Frequently Asked Questions

Taking an Amenorrhea Test is important to identify the underlying cause of absent or irregular menstrual periods. Amenorrhea, the absence of menstruation, can be a result of various factors, including hormonal imbalances, thyroid disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or other medical conditions. By undergoing an Amenorrhea Test, individuals can determine the cause of their menstrual irregularities, receive appropriate treatment, and address any underlying health concerns.

An Amenorrhea Test may be recommended for individuals who experience absent or irregular menstrual periods. If you have not had a period for three months or longer, or if your menstrual cycle is consistently irregular you may consider undergoing this test.

Additionally, individuals who are experiencing other symptoms alongside amenorrhea, such as excessive hair growth, weight changes, or signs of hormonal imbalance, may also benefit from the test. By identifying the underlying cause of amenorrhea, appropriate treatment and management strategies can be implemented to restore regular menstrual cycles and address any associated health issues.

The test is performed by a doctor at one of our partner clinics in central Singapore. Once you select a preferred timing on the medical questionnaire one of our customer care team members will be in touch with you to book the appointment.

It typically takes about 7 days to get results after your sample arrives at our lab. In total, expect about 10 days from the time you sample collection. We’ll contact you once the results are ready! If you haven’t received your test results after 10 days, please contact customer.care@ease-healthcare.com.

After the test, you will receive your test results. If your results are abnormal further evaluation may be required. In such cases, one of our doctors will contact you to discuss your results and provide guidance on next steps. They may recommend additional tests, to further evaluate any abnormalities and determine the appropriate course of action.
