What is peri & menopause?

Menopause

During menopause, a woman’s body undergoes significant hormonal changes. Estrogen and progesterone levels, which regulate the menstrual cycle, begin to decline, causing the ovaries stop producing eggs, and for menstrual periods stop. Low oestrogen levels are also associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis which can have a significant impact on quality of life, morbidity and mortality.

Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the stage before menopause during which a woman's hormone levels begin to fluctuate, leading to changes in her menstrual cycle and other symptoms such as hot flashes, mood changes, and vaginal dryness. As a woman approaches menopause, her ovaries start producing less estrogen, leading to changes in her menstrual cycle and further symptoms.

Perimenopause is the transition period just before a woman enters menopause, during which, oestrogen levels start to fall. This is typically when she may experience symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, insomnia or vaginal dryness.
It’s when a woman hasn’t had a period for at least 12 months, marking the end of her reproductive years. Due to low oestrogen levels associated with menopause, a woman may be at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis after menopause.
The average length of perimenopause is 4 years, although it can last for anywhere from a few months to a decade. In general, most women will find that their symptoms improve after they have reached menopause.
Yes, there are a variety of treatments available to help manage your symptoms, including hormone therapy, non-hormonal medications, and lifestyle changes. Our doctors can help develop a personalised treatment plan for you.
