Why take a Bone Density Test?

Prevents bone loss

Early detection can prevent bone loss and fractures. Knowing your bone density can help you take steps to keep your bones strong and healthy.

Assess fracture risk

Our test assesses your risk of fractures (especially important for women who are postmenopausal or have low estrogen levels).

Monitoring progression

Regular testing can help you and your healthcare provider track any changes and adjust bone health treatment plans if necessary.

Guide treatment options

With this test, our team can help you create a personalized treatment plan to manage your symptoms and improve your overall health.

A bone density test is a medical test that measures the strength and density of bones. This test is important for women who are going through menopause because they are at a higher risk for developing osteoporosis, a condition where bones become weak and brittle.
The bone density test is a simple, noninvasive procedure that usually takes about 15 minutes at one of our partner clinics. You will lie down on a table while a technician places a small machine over the area to be scanned, usually your hip and spine. The machine will scan your bones with low-dose X-rays, and the results will be sent to your doctor for analysis.

Women going through peri/menopause may consider taking a Bone Density Test to assess changes in bone density and body composition. During this stage, decline in oestrogen levels can increase osteoporosis risk, a condition characterized by weakened bones. Women with additional risk factors, such as early menopause, prolonged corticosteroid use, low body weight, or a history of fragility fractures, may consider earlier screening. This test helps evaluate bone density and provides crucial information for developing strategies to maintain or improve bone health.

As women age, especially after menopause, they become more susceptible to bone health issues such as osteoporosis. Common symptoms of bone health issues include back pain, loss of height over time, a stooped posture, and fragility fractures. Women going through menopause will also experience a drop in their oestrogen levels, which can further impact their bone health.

What is being tested?

Our Bone Density Test measures the mineral density of your bones, which is a key indicator of bone strength and risk of osteoporosis.

Bone Mineral Density (BMD)

Bone mineral density (BMD) is a measure of the amount of minerals, such as calcium, present in bone tissue. It is an important indicator of bone health, and low BMD can indicate an increased risk of fractures. During menopause, the body's levels of estrogen decline, which can lead to a decrease in BMD. This decrease can happen rapidly in the first few years after menopause and can continue over time. This is why it's important for menopausal women to monitor their bone health and consider taking a bone density test.

The results of the test provide an estimate of bone strength and the likelihood of fractures. A higher bone mineral density indicates stronger bones, while a lower bone mineral density suggests weaker bones and an increased risk of fractures.
Yes, if you’re concerned about your bone health you can take a bone density test, regardless of age or menopause status. It can be important for those with a family history of osteoporosis, or a personal history of bone fractures with minimal trauma.
There are several treatment options available for bone health issues. Hormone therapy, for instance, can increase bone density. In addition, lifestyle changes such as regular exercise & calcium and vitamin D supplements may be recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Taking a Body Density Test during menopause/perimenopause is important because it helps assess changes in body composition that commonly occur during this stage. Hormonal shifts during menopause can lead to a decrease in estrogen levels, which can contribute to a loss of bone density and an increase in body fat. A Body Density Test provides valuable information about these changes, allowing for early detection and intervention. By understanding changes in body composition, women can take proactive measures to manage bone health, prevent osteoporosis, and maintain a healthy weight during this transitional phase.
