A Pap smear test (Pap test), is a simple & quick screening test that is used to detect any abnormal cells or changes in the cervix that may indicate cervical cancer or other cervical conditions. During the test, a healthcare provider collects a small sample of cells from the cervix using a brush. Sexually active women are recommended to start receiving regular Pap smear tests at age 25, and continue getting tested every 3 years.

During a Pap smear, a healthcare provider uses a speculum to gently hold open the vagina, allowing them to collect a small sample of cells from the cervix using a small brush. It takes a few minutes to complete. The sample will then be sent to one of our partner laboratories for analysis. One of our doctors will reach out to share the results once they are ready.

The results of a Pap smear test will indicate whether the cells collected from your cervix are normal or abnormal. A normal result means that no abnormal cells were detected, while an abnormal result means that some cells appear abnormal or precancerous. If abnormal cells are found, it does not necessarily mean that you have cervical cancer. In most cases, abnormal cells can be treated before they develop into cancer. Depending on the severity of the abnormality, your healthcare provider may recommend further testing, such as a biopsy, to determine the next steps.

While a Pap smear checks for abnormal cell growth in the cervix, an HPV test specifically checks for the presence of HPV. The Pap smear is recommended once every 3 years for women between the ages of 25 and 29 years old, and the HPV test is the recommended screening tool for women aged 30 years and above.
