A Pap smear test, also known as a Pap test, is a simple and quick screening test that is used to detect any abnormal cells or changes in the cervix that may indicate cervical cancer or other cervical conditions. During the test, a healthcare provider collects a small sample of cells from the cervix using a brush.
The test involves collecting a small sample of cells from the cervix which takes place at one of our partner clinics. This is done by a healthcare provider using a small brush and it takes a few minutes. The sample will then be sent to one of our partner laboratories for analysis. One of our doctors will reach out to share the results once they are ready.
The results of a Pap smear test will indicate whether the cells collected from your cervix are normal or abnormal. A normal result means that no abnormal cells were detected, while an abnormal result means that some cells appear abnormal or precancerous. If abnormal cells are found, it does not necessarily mean that you have cervical cancer. In most cases, abnormal cells can be treated before they develop into cancer. Depending on the severity of the abnormality, your healthcare provider may recommend further testing, such as a biopsy, to determine the next steps.
While a Pap smear checks for abnormal cell growth in the cervix, an HPV test specifically checks for the presence of HPV. A Pap smear can also detect abnormal cells caused by other infections or conditions, while an HPV test only looks for the presence of the virus.
